Therapy Dog Awareness Month

Adorable dog

September is Therapy Dog Awareness Month, this years theme is "Let's Paws the Pressure this September".  The Paws the Pressure is a program that is offering organisations and workplaces the opportunity to have a visit from the delta therapy dogs. Research confirms the benefits of therapy dogs can help reduce stress levels and brings joy and laughter to children and adults who are in hospitals and nursing homes across Australia.

Many people are reluctant to believe the research and feel that this is just a hype. However a story featured in PerthNow, in June 2018, told the story of a local Baptistcare aged facility that has introduced pet therapy into residents lifestyle program. Every Tuesday, their special guest is a 6 year old Labradoodle Max visits the facility and brings joy and laughter to the lives of residents, staff and visitors.  The article shard the story of one individual 79 year old resident Jule and how she looks forward to the visit from canine friend, that is prone to "sticking his tongue out at her".

The facilities Lifesyle Coordinator Hannah Motamedi, said “We see our residents making wonderful connections with Max and have observed improvements in mood, mental wellbeing, less negative behaviours and an increase in socialisation. Our residents want to cuddle, pat, talk and feed Max and his visits are a welcome addition to their lives.”

Therapy Dogs are not just limited to Aged Care facilities, more and more instituions and organisations are introducing pet therapy into their culture and reports are suggesting it is having a positive effect on work load, improving social skills and also quality of life.

Every Friday here at Australia Health Professionals, we have the pleasure of having the top dog Marv visit the office. Marv is the pet of our CEO, Simon Thomas. Marv never fails to put a smile on the faces of everyone in the office and he even manages to put a smile on the faces of staff from other offices in the building when they see him. Check out the pictures below of King Marv and some of our AHP Recruitment Consultants.

We would love to hear what your thoughts are on Therapy Dogs and if your aged care facility or work place enjoy a visit from our beloved canine friends.
