Parliament clear aged care reform bill

On Monday evening members of Parliament passed the Aged Care Reform Bill 2018, this legislation establishes new quality standards applying to all 2,700 aged care providers and 366,000 staff in Australia,

The passing of this bill is a welcome change to aged care standards in Australia, as it represents the first upgrade in 20 years. The new aged care benchmarks will bring together four previously separate standards that cover Aboriginal flexible care, residential care, home care, and transitional care.

The elements of the draft Aged Care Quality Standards

  • Client dignity and choice
  • Ongoing assessment and planning of personal and clinical care
  • Services and supports for daily living
  • The service environment
  • Feedback and complaints
  • Human resources
  • Governance

All care providers will undergo a transition period between now and July 2019 and $50million to help them adapt.
