Of course we have a Physio onsite!

Physio on site

You’ve probably already noticed that prospective clients are better informed and more discerning than ever before. The plethora of information that’s now available to aged care consumers means there’s much more to securing that next admission than simply having an available bed.

What’s your point of difference? How do you compete with the brand new facility that just opened down the street? Why should a client choose your service over the others?

I’m hoping you could quickly fire off some great answers to these questions. Make no mistake, occupancy and funding are the keys to your commercial success, but if you’re struggling to find some compelling answers, maybe we can help.

We’ve previously discussed some of the great opportunities that are available to improve the way we perform our core business…caring for the elderly. Want to improve your care standards, resident outcomes, and local reputation? Interested in decreasing resident injuries, acute hospital admissions, and workers' compensation claims? Then get yourself a Physiotherapist!

For the moment, let’s forget about ACFI (We’ll get to that later...but if it’s the first thing that came to mind when you saw ‘Physiotherapist’, you might need to adjust your way of thinking) and concentrate on the real advantages for you and your residents.

Grab the incident register and look back over the last twelve months. How’s the falls rate… can you identify any obvious trends? (Remember that even a steady fall rate doesn’t warrant complacency). We’re guessing it could be improved. Imagine showing a prospective client a graph of your facility’s decreasing fall rates and telling them about your mobility/exercise/strength training programs…now there’s a point of difference.

(Remember, they’ll be checking out other facilities, so why not deliver a blow to your competitors and tell the client they should ask to see the incident logs at other facilities too!)

While you’ve got that register out, have a look at the skin tear rates. We’d wager there’s some room for improvement here as well. Decrease the rate of skin injuries and you have another down-trending graph to show them. (And yet another item that your competitors won't be able to produce)

And here’s the knockout punch. Schedule the facility tours to coincide with your daily exercise classes. Glossy brochures and stylish websites just can’t compete with a room full of active, smiling, and motivated residents. Place yourself in the shoes of a prospective client…how would something like this influence your decision to choose a facility?

These are just some of the advantages of having the right Physiotherapist on your team.

  • Instant and accurate resident assessments: New admissions, falls injuries and mobility changes are assessed when they’re needed…right away.
  • Resident strength and mobility training: Group and individual classes increase resident ability and confidence while promoting socialization.
  • Equipment and environmental assessment: Make sure the right equipment is being used in the right way and the changing needs of your residents are closely monitored and managed correctly.
  • Staff manual handling training: A well trained, well informed, and competent care team is the single most important component in reducing resident injury rates.

Oh yeah…your Physio can also contribute to receiving additional funding through ACFI 4b treatments. By the way...astute resident selection and appropriate treatment allocation mean that increased funding will more than cover your Physio employment costs. (The AHP model of care hasn’t been adjusted to suit the new ACFI rules…we didn’t need to because our treatment practices were already compliant).

I mention ACFI last because even though a solid ACFI funding stream is critical to your facility’s performance, it plays no part in your community reputation and bears no influence on the client’s choice of facility. Those things are up to you.

Can you see how easy it is for your facility to stand out from the rest and how you can easily trump the competition? More importantly, your residents will be healthier and happier…less falls, fewer injuries, fewer hospital admissions, better mobility, and better-skilled care staff. What’s not to like?
