AHP Running For Charbel

Meet Charbel!

Charbel suffers from Guillain Barre Syndrome (GBS). GBS is a a rare neurological disorder which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks part of its peripheral nervous system—the network of nerves located outside of the brain and spinal cord.

In August 2016, a healthy little boy called Charbel went on a lovely family holiday with his mum and dad Rita and Abed. Little Charbel is their life and soul, their pride and joy.

Little Charbel was enjoying his first family holiday to Lebanon when he suddenly became very sick. His mum, Rita and dad, Abed didn’t know what was wrong as they rushed him to the hospital. Over a period of 12 hours their beautiful boy deteriorated in front of their eyes as they helplessly watched on. Within 12 hours Charbel had gone from a happy go lucky mischievous 18 month old to a bed ridden boy paralysed from the neck down. Charbel had contracted an extremely rare condition known as Guillain Barre Syndrome or (GBS).

He was flown from Lebanon back home to the Royal Randwick Children’s Hospital, Australia where he initially stayed in intensive care for several months with occasions where his life was really at risk. Fast forward two years and little Charbel and his mum and dad are still in the hospital, his road to recovery has been extremely slow and rare, even for this condition.

Abed earns an honest living as a Security officer at Sydney Airport and is the sole income earner for the family given that Rita now lives with Charbel in the hospital. The general care for Charbel is covered but any additional special treatment and equipment comes at a substantial cost.

We, at Australian Health Professionals (AHP), have met with Charbel and his family and are doing everything we can to raise money for much needed treatment and equipment to improve the quality of life for Charbel, Rita and Abed and give the little fella the best possible chance in recovery. We all hope that Charbel will walk again and lead as normal a life as possible when he grows up, but right now this little boy really needs our and your help. Anything and everything raised will go directly to the family and their needs.

At AHP we take this very seriously and in a bold bid to create awareness and raise funds for the family, several committed members of the AHP team will be running the Melbourne Marathon. Many of us have never even ran a half marathon so this challenge is HUGE but we are doing it for Charbel, Rita and Abed. We will be documenting the build up and publishing our road to the marathon. We will be pushing hard throughout this campaign.

We kindly ask that you get behind us and support the campaign ‘AHP Running for Charbel”

No matter how big or small, please know your contribution will be greatly appreciated and is for such an amazing cause.

Please dig deep and support this beautiful little boy to get better.

We also want to send a big shout out to all the team at Sydney Children’s Hospital in Randwick. We are so appreciative and thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the terrific work that you do day in, day out.

Many thanks in advance.

The team at Australian Health Professionals, Abed, Rita and little Charbel.
